It’s difficult to be a positive friend in a group of negative friends, and it is difficult being a negative friend in a group of positive friends. It’s easy to be the smartest kid in the class with only a B average if everyone else has a D average. You can have the same conversations with two different groups and have two completely different experiences. We have all heard the saying, “birds of a feather flock together.” I will take it a step further and say that what you are really doing is facilitating energy when you choose who to communicate with. The Law of Conservation of Energy states that energy can neither be created or destroyed. Rather, energy is transformed or transferred from one form to another. This takes many forms, like the way our bodies take what we consume and use it as energy for functioning, or like when you want into a room and feel the tension from a conversation being had without hearing a single word. It’s all energy. We cannot see it, but it is there. If you want to achieve success, you have to surround yourself with the right people and the right energy for your desired direction. It does almost no good, and it is nearly impossible to try and change your mindset without changing your environment. The environment is composed of many aspects. It’s the people you most associate with, and the way you typically interact with them. If you are surrounded by gossipy and negative people, then by default, you’re guilty by association. But if you surround yourself with individuals who want to learn and grow, with thinkers and successful individuals, then this will become the energy you exchange with. Surround yourself with the energy that most appeals to where you want to be. This isn’t limited to just friends, but also with family. You are not obligated to spend your time or energy with people who drain or delay your growth, even if “blood is thicker than water.” The quickest way to change someone is from your own actions. Let the person see you thrive, allow them to see the change in you as motivation for their own. Let them see your light and feel its warmth.
Successful people hang out with successful people, and sometimes, people on the outside think that the successful person feels “above” everyone else. For the most part, this isn’t true. The successful person just understands the power of the company he or she keeps and the effect it has on his or her life. Where energy goes, energy flows. When you turn down the noise, you can start to understand the power of the company you keep.
